How to Install a Glueless Wig in Under 10 Minutes
Share
The number one reason women don't try wigs sooner is that they think it's complicated. I'm here to tell you it's not — at least not with a glueless wig. Once you have the right unit and know what you're doing, you're fully installed and out the door in under 10 minutes. No glue. No salon appointment. No damage to your edges.
I've been a licensed cosmetologist for over 20 years. This is exactly how I'd walk you through it.
What you'll need
For a true glueless install, you need almost nothing. Your wig, a rat tail comb, some edge control, and a scarf or wig grip band. That's it. No lace glue, no spray adhesive, no Got2B. The wig is designed to stay on without it.
Optional: a hand-held steamer or flat iron if you want to lay your edges. A wig stand to set the unit on before you put it on.
Step 1: Prep your natural hair (2 minutes)
If your hair is short, braid it flat or use a stocking cap to compress it. If your hair is long, do flat braids or cornrows going back. The goal is a smooth surface under the wig so it sits flat against your head.
Put your wig grip band or stocking cap on. This is what holds the wig in place without glue — the friction between the cap and the wig base keeps everything secure.
Step 2: Position the wig (1 minute)
Hold the wig at the back tabs and flip it open. Line up the front hairline with your natural hairline — not too far forward, not too far back. A good rule: your lace should sit about a quarter inch above where you want your hairline to appear.
Slide the wig back onto your head, cap first.
Step 3: Secure the wig (2 minutes)
Once it's positioned, reach inside and fasten the adjustable elastic band at the back. Pull it snug — not tight enough to give you a headache, but firm enough that the wig doesn't shift when you move. Then clip in the built-in combs: one at the front center and one on each side near your temples.
At this point the wig is on and secure. You could stop here and go about your day.
Step 4: Trim and lay the lace (3 minutes)
This is the step that takes the most practice, but it gets faster every time. Using small scissors, carefully cut the lace along your hairline. Cut just close enough to the baby hairs — don't cut into the hair itself. A curved nail scissor works great here for precision.
Then apply a small amount of edge control along the perimeter and use the back of your comb or a soft brush to press the lace down against your skin. With HD lace, it melts almost on its own — you're just smoothing it out.
Tie a satin scarf around your edges for 2 minutes to set everything down. Take it off and you'll have a completely clean, natural-looking hairline.
Step 5: Style (2 minutes)
Part it where you want it. Use the rat tail comb to create a clean center part or a deep side part. Fluff the hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. If you want to add waves or a curl, the hair is 100% virgin human hair — safe for heat up to 450°F.
That's it. You're done.
Tips to make it look even more natural
Bleach the knots before your first wear. The knots at the base of each hair strand can look dark against the lace. Bleaching them lightens the knot so it disappears against your scalp. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, ask a stylist to do it once before your first install.
Customize your baby hairs. Use a soft toothbrush and edge control to style the baby hairs along your hairline. Swoops, curls, or flat — whatever matches your vibe. This is what makes a wig look really personal.
Match your skin tone at the part. Dust a little powder or eyeshadow that matches your scalp color along the part. This makes the part look like it grew from your head.
Does a glueless wig stay on all day?
Yes — when it's built right. A properly constructed glueless wig with an elastic band and combs will stay on through a full day of normal activity. If you want extra hold for a workout or a long event, you can apply a small amount of Got2B or wig tape just at the perimeter. But for everyday wear, you don't need it.
